Blog: Engine and Gearbox Maintenance: A Complete Guide to Checking Oil Levels

Ensuring your engine and gearbox are well-maintained is crucial for keeping your vehicle running smoothly. One vital aspect of maintenance is checking the oil levels in both the engine and gearbox. In this blog, we’ll take you through the step-by-step process of checking oil levels for both components, highlighting the importance of this routine task.

Why Check Oil Levels?

Oil serves as the lifeblood of your engine and gearbox, lubricating moving parts, reducing friction, and dissipating heat. Low oil levels can lead to increased wear and tear, reduced performance, and potential damage to critical components. Regularly checking oil levels helps prevent these issues and ensures your engine and gearbox operate smoothly.

Safety Precautions:

  • Gloves: Protect your hands from dirt, oil, and potential burns.
  • Safety Glasses: Shield your eyes from splashes or debris.

Parts Required:

Before beginning any maintenance tasks, it’s essential to prioritize safety. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required for this job:

To top up oil levels if necessary, you’ll need the following part:

  • EP710008 – Engine Oil -API CC 5L

(Note: For vehicles equipped with CL38 and PRM125 gearbox, ATF – Dextron II or III is used instead of engine oil.)

Checking Engine Oil Levels:

  1. Engine: Start by locating the engine oil dipstick, typically found near the engine block. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean with a cloth, and re-insert it fully. Then, remove the dipstick again and check the oil level. It should fall between the two marks on the dipstick. If the level is low, add oil as required to reach the optimal level.
  2. Gearbox: Remove the oil filler/dipstick located on top of the gearbox. Wipe the dipstick clean and re-insert it fully into the gearbox. Remove the dipstick again and observe the oil level. It should be at the bottom line or within the marked range. If necessary, top up the gearbox oil to maintain the correct level.

Regularly inspecting oil levels for both the engine and gearbox is key to ensuring your vehicle’s longevity and performance. By following these straightforward steps and prioritizing safety, you can maintain optimal oil levels and keep your engine and gearbox running smoothly.
